A Thai Hom Mali rice 25kg bag is the size most restaurants and caterers buy. A 50kg bag is what distributors, wholesalers and repackers usually want. We pack and export both from Thailand, filled with the same 92% purity Hom Mali. This page explains what goes into each bag, how they’re made, how many fit in a container, and how to order.
If you’re choosing between the two, or trying to work out which one your customers actually need, read on.

Bag Specifications
Here’s what the bags themselves look like as standard. We can change almost all of it if your market needs something different.

A PE liner inside the woven bag adds protection against moisture and smells. For long sea routes or humid ports, we recommend it.
Thai Hom Mali Rice 25kg Bag: Who It’s For
The Thai Hom Mali rice 25kg bag is the kitchen size. It’s what most restaurants in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas buy.
- Easy to carry. One person can lift and pour a 25kg bag. That matters in a busy kitchen.
- Right amount. A mid-sized Thai restaurant can get through a 25kg bag in a few days to a week, so the rice stays fresh.
- Easy to store. It fits on a shelf or a small pallet in a storeroom.
- Good for small shops. Some Asian grocers sell the Thai Hom Mali rice 25kg bag straight to families who eat a lot of rice.
If your customers are restaurants, caterers, hotels or big households, the 25kg bag is usually the right call.
Thai Hom Mali Rice 50kg Bag: Who It’s For
The Thai Hom Mali rice 50kg bag is the trade size.
- Lowest cost per ton. Fewer bags per container means less bag cost and less labor.
- Good for repacking. If you repack into 1kg, 2kg or 5kg retail bags in your own country, 50kg bags are the cheapest way to bring rice in.
- Common in wholesale markets. In many countries, rice is traded in 50kg bags between wholesalers.
- Easy to count. A 20 foot container usually holds about 500 of them.
It’s heavy, though. A 50kg bag takes two people or a trolley to move safely. In some countries, workplace rules limit how much one person can lift, which is one reason more buyers are moving to 25kg.
How Many Bags Fit in a Container?
Rice is heavy, so containers fill up by weight before they fill up by space. A rough guide:
| Container | Bag size | Bags | Approximate weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 foot | Thai Hom Mali rice 25kg bag | about 1,000 | about 25 metric tons |
| 20 foot | Thai Hom Mali rice 50kg bag | about 500 | about 25 metric tons |
| 40 foot | 25kg or 50kg | varies | usually 25 to 27 metric tons because of weight limits |
The exact load depends on the shipping line, your port and road weight limits at each end. We’ll confirm it when we quote. For more on full container orders, see our guide to Thai Hom Mali rice bulk and container supply.
Price Difference Between 25kg and 50kg
The rice costs the same per ton. The bag doesn’t.
- A Thai Hom Mali rice 50kg bag is usually the cheapest way to buy per ton.
- A Thai Hom Mali rice 25kg bag costs a little more per ton, because you need twice as many bags and twice as much stitching and handling.
- Printed bags cost more than plain ones, mostly on the first order when plates and artwork are set up.
- A PE liner adds a small amount per bag.
The difference is small compared with the rice itself. Most buyers choose the size that suits their customers rather than chasing the last few dollars. For the full price picture, read our guide to Thai Hom Mali rice price per ton.
Printed or Plain Thai Hom Mali Rice 25kg Bag?
You have three choices for a Thai Hom Mali rice 25kg bag or 50kg bag:
- Plain bags with a simple label or stencil. Cheapest and quickest.
- Our standard printed bags. Ready to go, with product name, weight and origin.
- Your own printed bags. Your brand, your language, your barcode.
For your own brand, send us artwork or a brief. Check the label wording with your local food authority before the first print. Most countries want the product name, net weight, origin, importer details and a best before or packing date. Our guide to private label Thai Hom Mali rice covers it in detail.
How We Pack Each Thai Hom Mali Rice 25kg Bag and 50kg Bag
Packing is where a lot of small problems start, so we take care with it.
- Rice comes off the sorting line and is tested for moisture, broken and purity.
- Bags are filled on a weighing scale, set a little over net weight to allow for small losses.
- Each bag is check-weighed at random through the run.
- Bags are stitched shut and batch coded.
- Bags are stacked on pallets in a clean, dry area until loading.
Short weight is one of the most common complaints in the rice trade. A Thai Hom Mali rice 50kg bag that’s really 49kg costs you 500kg across a container. We check-weigh so that doesn’t happen, and the independent surveyor checks again at loading.
About the Rice Itself
It’s easy to spend all your time on bags and forget what’s in them. Thai Hom Mali is Thailand’s fragrant long grain rice, made from the KDML 105 and RD15 varieties and known abroad as jasmine rice. Under the Thai standard, rice sold as Thai Hom Mali has to be at least 92% Hom Mali.
We buy our paddy in the northeast, mainly in Surin, Roi Et, Buriram, Sisaket, Yasothon and Ubon Ratchathani. Hom Mali is planted in the rainy season and harvested once a year, from about November to January. The famous pandan-like smell comes from a natural compound called 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline, which is strongest in new crop rice.
That’s why we put the crop year in every contract. A Thai Hom Mali rice 25kg bag of new crop rice smells noticeably better than one filled with rice from two seasons back, even if every other number is the same. For more on the variety, read our guide to Hom Mali 105 rice (KDML 105).
The 25kg Bag in a Restaurant Kitchen
Most of the questions we get about the Thai Hom Mali rice 25kg bag come from people supplying restaurants, so here’s how it tends to work in practice.
A restaurant opens one bag at a time and tips it into a rice bin near the cooker. Staff scoop from the bin, rinse and cook. When the bin runs low, the next bag goes in. A 25kg bag is the right size for this: it’s light enough for one person to lift onto a bench, and it empties before the rice has time to lose its smell.
Things restaurant buyers care about:
- Consistent cooking. If the water ratio changes from bag to bag, cooks notice. Keeping the same grade and crop year keeps the rice behaving the same way.
- Clean rice. Nobody wants to find stones or husk in a customer’s bowl. Our cleaning and color sorting take care of that.
- A clear label. Kitchens like to see the product name, weight and date on the bag.
- Steady supply. A restaurant can’t run out of rice. Distributors who supply them need regular containers, not one-off orders.
If you’re a distributor serving restaurants, the Thai Hom Mali rice 25kg bag is probably the core of your range.
The 50kg Bag in a Repacking Plant
Repackers work differently. They buy the Thai Hom Mali rice 50kg bag, cut it open at the top of a packing line, and refill the rice into 1kg, 2kg or 5kg retail packs under their own brand.
For them, what matters is:
- Cost per ton. Every cent saved on the bag goes to their margin.
- Clean, dry rice. Moisture or dust causes trouble on a packing machine.
- Low broken. Broken bits settle at the bottom of retail bags and look bad through a window.
- Consistent weight. Short bags throw off their stock counts.
If you repack, ask us about jumbo bags too. Some plants prefer one-ton bags that go straight onto a hopper.
A Few Things Buyers Often Forget
- Pallets. Bags usually load loose into the container, floor loaded, to fit the most weight. If you need them on pallets at your end, plan for unloading labor or ask us about palletized loading, which carries less weight.
- Bag marks. If you need your importer name, lot number or a specific date format printed on each bag, tell us before we print.
- Language. Many countries require labels in the local language. Arabic, French, Spanish and others are all fine, as long as you give us the text.
- Barcodes. Retail chains may ask for barcodes even on a Thai Hom Mali rice 25kg bag. Get the numbers issued before we print.
Checking Your Delivery
When your container arrives, spend an hour checking it before you sell anything.
- Count bags against the packing list.
- Weigh 10 to 20 bags at random, a mix of Thai Hom Mali rice 25kg bags and 50kg bags if you ordered both.
- Open a few bags from different parts of the load and compare with your sample.
- Check the printing, batch codes and dates.
- Cook a pot and smell it.
If anything looks wrong, take photos and tell us right away with the surveyor’s certificate to hand. Problems are much easier to sort out when they’re raised early.
Handling and Storage at Your End
Once the bags reach you, a bit of care keeps the rice at its best.
- Use pallets. Never stack bags straight on a concrete floor. Concrete draws up moisture.
- Keep away from walls. Leave a gap so air can move.
- Don’t stack too high. Ten to twelve bags high is plenty for 50kg bags. Higher stacks crush the bottom layer.
- Keep it cool and dry. Heat takes the aroma away fastest.
- Keep away from smells. Rice picks up odors from fuel, chemicals, spices and cleaning products.
- First in, first out. Sell older bags first.
For restaurants, once a Thai Hom Mali rice 25kg bag is opened, tip the rice into a sealed bin with a lid. It keeps insects out and the smell in.
Why Bag Quality Matters on Long Routes
A container can spend four to six weeks at sea, crossing warm and cool waters. Temperature swings inside the steel box can cause condensation, sometimes called container rain. Wet bags lead to mold and rejected cargo.
To protect every Thai Hom Mali rice 25kg bag and Thai Hom Mali rice 50kg bag on the way, we:
- pack at 14% moisture or lower
- use strong woven bags with even stitching
- add a PE liner when the route calls for it
- line the container with kraft paper
- hang desiccant bags inside to soak up moisture
These small steps are the difference between rice that arrives like it left and rice that arrives with problems.
Documents With Every Shipment
Every order of Thai Hom Mali rice 25kg bags or 50kg bags comes with:
- Commercial invoice and packing list, showing bag count and weights
- Bill of lading
- Certificate of origin
- Phytosanitary certificate issued under IPPC rules
- Fumigation certificate
- Quality and weight certificate from an independent surveyor
- Thai Hom Mali certificate from the Department of Foreign Trade
We can add halal certificates, lab reports and other papers your country needs. Tell us the destination before we start.
Shipping and Payment
We ship from Bangkok and Laem Chabang and quote on standard Incoterms: FOB, CFR or CIF. Milling and packing take about two to three weeks after payment, plus a couple of weeks for new printed bags on the first order.
Payment is by LC at sight or TT with a deposit, with the balance against documents. We don’t ask new buyers to pay everything up front.
Mixing Bag Sizes in One Container
You don’t have to choose one size for the whole container. Plenty of buyers take a mix, for example half Thai Hom Mali rice 25kg bags for restaurants and half 50kg bags for their own repacking line.
You can also mix products. A container might carry Hom Mali in 25kg bags alongside Thai glutinous rice, Pathumthani fragrant rice or white rice 5% broken. Each product is packed and labeled on its own so there’s no confusion at customs or in your warehouse.
The full product list is on our products page.
Smaller Bags
If your customers are shoppers rather than kitchens, you may want smaller packs. We also pack 5kg and 10kg bags, and jumbo bags for repacking plants. Many buyers start with 25kg for restaurants and add 5kg retail bags once they’ve found shops that want the rice.
Which Size Should You Order?
If you’re still unsure, here’s a simple way to decide.
Order the Thai Hom Mali rice 25kg bag if:
- You sell mainly to restaurants, caterers or hotels
- Your customers don’t have forklifts
- Workplace lifting rules matter in your country
- You want the rice to stay fresh after opening
Order the Thai Hom Mali rice 50kg bag if:
- You’re a distributor or wholesaler selling on to others
- You repack into smaller retail bags
- Your local market trades rice in 50kg bags
- You want the lowest possible cost per ton
And if you serve both kinds of customer, order both.
Planning Orders Through the Year
Restaurants use rice every day, so the Thai Hom Mali rice 25kg bag is a steady seller all year. Demand still has peaks. Chinese New Year, Ramadan, the end-of-year holidays and big local festivals all push rice sales up, and freight rates often rise at the same time.
A few tips:
- Order two to three months before a peak season, not two weeks before.
- Keep a buffer stock of a few weeks, especially of the Thai Hom Mali rice 25kg bag if restaurants rely on you.
- Book new crop rice from about January onwards if you want the strongest aroma.
- Ask us about a standing order, so your containers leave on a regular schedule.
What You Can Expect From Us
On every order of Thai Hom Mali rice 25kg bags or 50kg bags, you get:

- A sample from current stock before you commit
- Check-weighed bags and an independent surveyor at loading
- Draft documents to check before the final set goes out
- A retained sample from your lot, kept in case of any question
- Quick answers by email or WhatsApp
If something is wrong with a bag, a print or a load, we sort it out. That’s how we want to keep your Thai Hom Mali rice 25kg bag orders coming back to us.
Bags for Hot and Humid Markets
If your warehouse is in a hot, humid country, bag choice matters more. Woven PP bags breathe a little, which helps, but they also let in moisture and smells over time. A PE liner inside each Thai Hom Mali rice 25kg bag or 50kg bag adds a barrier without much cost. Store bags on pallets, keep the warehouse ventilated, and try to sell within about 12 months of milling. Tell us where the rice is going and how long it will sit before it sells, and we will suggest the bag and liner combination that makes the most sense for that route and climate.
