What We Mean by Thai Jasmine Rice

Before talking money, it helps to be clear on what’s being priced, because the name gets used loosely.

In the export trade, “Thai jasmine rice” usually means our Pathumthani fragrant rice. It’s a long grain, soft, fragrant rice grown mostly in central Thailand, and it’s the everyday jasmine rice you see in a lot of supermarkets and restaurants around the world. It is not the same as Thai Hom Mali 100%, which is the premium grade grown in the northeast from KDML 105 and RD15 paddy. Hom Mali smells stronger, cooks softer and costs a lot more.

So when you compare quotes, check which one you’re being offered. Some sellers call Pathumthani “jasmine” and price it like Hom Mali. Others call Hom Mali “jasmine” and it looks expensive next to everyone else. We wrote a whole piece on this, Thai Hom Mali vs jasmine rice, if you want the long version.

If you want the background on the variety itself, the jasmine rice entry on Wikipedia is a fair summary.

Thai Jasmine Rice Price Per Ton Right Now

Here’s the honest picture as of late September 2026. These are FOB Bangkok ranges for full containers, not retail and not small lots.

GradeTypical FOB range (USD per metric ton)
Thai jasmine rice (Pathumthani fragrant), 5% brokenabout $620 to $780
Thai Hom Mali rice 92% purityabout $1,100 to $1,150
Thai Hom Mali rice 100% Grade Aabove the 92% grade, quoted per crop
Organic jasmine ricepremium over conventional, quoted per lot
Thai white rice 5% broken (for comparison)about $470 to $490

So the Thai jasmine rice price per ton sits in the middle. It costs more than ordinary long grain white rice and a lot less than Hom Mali. That’s the reason it sells so well. You get the smell and soft texture people want from Thai rice without paying top price.

A quick warning about any Thai jasmine rice price per ton you see online, ours included. The market moves every week. The baht moves, the harvest moves, freight moves. Treat the table as a guide, and ask us for a live quote before you plan a sale around it.

What You Get for That Price

A price only means something next to a spec. This is what a standard load of our Thai jasmine rice looks like on paper.

  • Origin: Thailand
  • Grain type: long grain, white, fragrant
  • Broken grains: 5% maximum
  • Moisture: 12 to 14% maximum
  • Purity: 95% minimum
  • Foreign matter: 0.1% maximum
  • Crop year: current season
  • Shelf life: up to 24 months if stored cool and dry
  • Packing: 1kg, 5kg, 10kg, 25kg and 50kg bags
  • Documents: phytosanitary certificate, certificate of origin, fumigation, certificate of analysis on request

We test every batch before it’s bagged. If the rice doesn’t meet the spec on your contract, it doesn’t get loaded. You can see how we do this on our quality control page.

Why the Thai Jasmine Rice Price Per Ton Changes

People sometimes think exporters just make prices up. We don’t, and neither do most of the serious mills here. A handful of things move the Thai jasmine rice price per ton, and once you know them, the quotes start to make sense.

The harvest and the crop year

Thailand has a main crop and a second crop. When new paddy comes in, prices usually ease. When stocks run low before the next harvest, prices firm up. New crop rice also smells stronger, so some buyers pay a bit more for it.

The baht

We buy paddy in baht and sell rice in dollars. When the baht is strong, our costs in dollars go up, and so does the price we have to ask. This has been a real factor in 2026.

Broken percentage and purity

A 5% broken jasmine costs more than a 10% or 25% broken. Higher purity costs more than a blend. If a quote looks cheap, check these two lines first.

Packing

A 50kg PP bag is the cheapest way to ship. Printed 5kg retail bags with your brand cost more per ton because of the bag, the printing and the extra labour. We explain the options in our post on Thai Hom Mali rice 25kg and 50kg bags, and the same bag choices apply to jasmine.

Competition from neighbours

Vietnam and Cambodia also sell fragrant rice. When their prices drop, Thai prices feel the pressure. When they sell out, Thai jasmine gets busier. If you want the full comparison, read our guide to Thai rice vs Vietnamese rice.

FOB, CFR and CIF: Which Price Are You Looking At?

This is where a lot of confusion comes from. Two quotes can be $80 apart and both be fair, because they’re quoting different things.

  • FOB Bangkok: the rice, the bags, the local trucking, the export papers and loading onto the ship. You pay the sea freight.
  • CFR your port: everything in FOB plus ocean freight to your port.
  • CIF your port: CFR plus marine insurance.

So a Thai jasmine rice price per ton quoted CIF to a far port will look higher than a FOB quote. It’s not a worse deal, it just includes more. If you’re not sure which one suits you, the Incoterms rules from the ICC are worth a read, or just ask us and we’ll quote both.

Price Per Ton vs Price Per Container

Most of our buyers think in containers, not tons, so it’s worth turning the Thai jasmine rice price per ton into a container price.

A 20ft container normally takes around 25 metric tons of rice in 50kg or 25kg bags. So if the Thai jasmine rice price per ton is, say, $700 FOB, one container of rice costs roughly $17,500 before freight. Retail bags in cartons fit a bit less. We covered the loading side in detail in how many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container.

LoadApprox. tonsAt $700/ton FOB
One 20ft container, 50kg bags25about $17,500
One 20ft container, 25kg bags25about $17,500 plus a small bag cost
Five 20ft containers125about $87,500

Who Buys Thai Jasmine Rice at This Price

We ship jasmine rice all over the world, and the Thai jasmine rice price per ton each buyer pays depends a lot on who they are. The buyers change, but they usually fall into a few groups.

Importers and distributors. They take full containers of 25kg or 50kg bags and sell on to shops, restaurants and wholesalers in their country. Price per ton matters most to them, and they usually order every month or two.

Supermarkets and private label brands. They want 1kg, 2kg or 5kg bags with their own printing. The Thai jasmine rice price per ton is a bit higher here because of the packing, but they sell at a better margin. We do this every week. See private label Thai Hom Mali rice for how it works; the process is the same for jasmine.

Restaurants and caterers. Usually through a local distributor, but some larger chains buy direct. They like 25kg bags.

Repackers. They buy in 50kg bags and pack locally into smaller sizes to save on freight.

How Our Jasmine Compares With Our Other Grades

If you’re building a range, it’s useful to see where jasmine sits against the other rice we sell.

Our gradeWhere it fitsRelative price
Thai Hom Mali ricepremium fragrant, strongest aromahighest
Organic jasmine ricecertified organic, health and specialty shelveshigh
Thai jasmine rice (Pathumthani)everyday fragrant ricemiddle
Thai glutinous ricesticky rice for Asian cooking and dessertsmiddle to high
White rice 5% brokeneveryday long grain whitelower
Thai parboiled rice 5% brokenfirm, non-sticky, strong in Africa and the Middle Eastlower

A lot of our buyers take a mixed container. For example, 60% jasmine, 20% Hom Mali and 20% white rice. That way they can test a few lines without committing to five containers of each.

How to Read a Cheap Quote

Every so often a buyer sends us a quote from somewhere else and asks why ours is higher. Usually it comes down to one of these.

  • The rice is a blend of jasmine and white rice, sold as jasmine.
  • The broken percentage is 10% or more, not 5%.
  • It’s old crop, and the smell has faded.
  • The moisture is high, which means the rice may not travel well.
  • The weight is short. A “50kg” bag that holds 48.5kg is a 3% price cut you didn’t agree to.
  • The papers aren’t included, and you find out at the port.

We’re not saying every cheap Thai jasmine rice price per ton is a trick. Sometimes a mill just has stock to clear. But ask for a sample and a written spec before you pay. We’d rather you check us properly than trust a number.

How We Keep Our Price Fair

We’re a Thai mill and exporter, not a trading desk reselling someone else’s rice. That’s the main reason we can keep our Thai jasmine rice price per ton steady for buyers who come back.

We buy paddy direct from farmers and cooperatives. We dry, mill, sort and pack it at our own facility. We book freight in volume, so the rates are better than a one-off shipper gets. And we have more than 40 years in this business, since 1980, so we’re not guessing at costs. You can read more about us on our About us page and see the awards we’ve received on our achievements page.

Paying for Your Order

Most buyers use one of two payment methods.

  • Telegraphic transfer (TT): usually a deposit when the contract is signed and the balance against a copy of the bill of lading.
  • Letter of credit (LC): a bank guarantees payment once the shipping documents match the contract. It costs a little more in bank fees but it’s safer for a first order.

For repeat customers we can talk about other terms. For a first order we’ll usually suggest an LC or a TT with a deposit. The paperwork side of this is covered in our post on rice export documents.

Samples and Inspection

Before you commit to a Thai jasmine rice price per ton and a full container, get a sample. We send them by courier, usually 1 to 2kg, cooked and tested at our end first. Cook it yourself. Smell it. Check the grain length. That tells you more than any spec sheet.

If you want an independent check before loading, we’re happy for SGS, Intertek, Bureau Veritas or a similar company to inspect at our warehouse. Most big buyers do this. It adds a small cost and a lot of peace of mind. Our rice standard page explains the grading we work to.

For general food standards, the Codex Alimentarius sets the international rules most importing countries follow.

Timelines: From Quote to Your Port

A typical order runs like this:

  1. You send us the grade, quantity, packing and your port.
  2. We send the Thai jasmine rice price per ton, FOB and CFR or CIF, within a day or two.
  3. We send samples if you need them.
  4. Contract signed, deposit or LC opened.
  5. We mill and pack, usually 2 to 3 weeks.
  6. Inspection, fumigation, loading.
  7. Sailing time depends on your port, from about 10 days in Asia to 5 or 6 weeks for farther routes.

For repeat orders on standard packing, we can often load faster because we keep jasmine in stock.

Example: How a Typical First Order Looks

Here’s an example of how a first order often goes. Say a distributor has been selling plain white rice and their customers start asking for something fragrant.

A sensible start is one 20ft container: 20 tons of jasmine in 25kg bags and 5 tons of Hom Mali in 5kg bags, printed with the distributor’s brand. We send samples, they cook them, they ask for one change to the bag design, and we load about three weeks later. Their Thai jasmine rice price per ton comes in a little above what they paid for white rice, but they can sell it for a good deal more. If it moves well, the next order is usually bigger.

That’s the pattern we’d suggest to anyone. Start small, check the rice, then build.

Thai Jasmine Rice Price Per Ton by Bag Size

Packing changes the number more than most buyers expect. Here’s roughly how it works on our side, using plain 50kg bags as the base.

PackingEffect on price per ton
50kg PP woven bag, plain or standard printbase price
25kg PP woven baga few dollars more per ton
10kg bagslightly more again
5kg bag in a master bag of 20kg or 25kgnoticeably more, because of the bag and the labour
1kg or 2kg retail packs in cartonsthe highest, and fewer tons fit in the container
Vacuum packed retail bagsquoted separately

So if you’re comparing a Thai jasmine rice price per ton from two suppliers, make sure you’re comparing the same bag. A 50kg price and a 5kg price can look very different for the same rice.

Freight: The Part of the Price You Don’t Control

Sea freight is the other big number on top of the Thai jasmine rice price per ton. We book it for most of our buyers because we ship enough to get decent rates, but it still moves with the market. Very roughly:

  • Short routes in Asia (Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, China): cheapest, and the rice arrives in one to two weeks.
  • Middle East (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Iraq): medium freight, two to three weeks.
  • Africa (West, East and South): higher freight and longer sailing, often four to six weeks, with a transshipment port on the way.
  • Europe and the UK: medium to high, four to five weeks.
  • North America and Oceania: depends heavily on the season and the line.

This is why we always give you the Thai jasmine rice price per ton FOB as well as the delivered price. You can then see what’s rice and what’s freight, and check the freight yourself with a forwarder if you want to.

How the Price Moves Through the Year

No two years are the same, but there’s a rough pattern we’ve watched for a long time. From about November to February, the main crop comes in and paddy is easier to buy. Prices tend to be softer, and it’s a good time to lock in a few months of supply. From about March to May, the second crop helps keep things steady. From June to October, stocks get thinner before the next main crop, and the Thai jasmine rice price per ton can firm up, sometimes quickly if there’s also strong demand from abroad.

Weather matters too. A dry year in central Thailand means less paddy and higher prices. A good rainy season usually means the opposite. We keep our regular buyers informed so nobody gets surprised by a sudden jump.

If you plan ahead, you can use this. Some of our buyers book a few months at a fixed Thai jasmine rice price per ton when the market is soft, with shipments spread out over the season.

Tips to Get a Better Thai Jasmine Rice Price Per Ton

  • Order full containers. Part loads cost more per ton.
  • Commit to a regular schedule. A monthly order lets us plan paddy and give you a steadier price.
  • Be flexible on packing. Plain 50kg bags are the cheapest.
  • Buy at the right time of year. New crop periods usually bring better prices.
  • Pay on time. Buyers who pay reliably get the best terms from any mill.

You can also follow the Thai market through the Thai Rice Exporters Association, which publishes weekly reference prices for the main Thai grades.
