How many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container? It’s one of the first questions new buyers ask us, and it’s a good one, because the answer drives your price per ton, your freight cost and how much you need to sell. The short answer is about 25 metric tons for most bagged rice. The longer answer depends on the bag size, the type of rice, your port and the road weight limits at both ends.
We load containers of Thai rice every week at our mill in central Thailand, so here’s how it really works, with the numbers we use ourselves.

The Short Answer
For standard export packing in 25kg or 50kg bags, a 20ft container usually takes 25 metric tons of rice. Some routes allow up to about 26 or 27 tons. Retail packing in small bags or cartons usually comes in lower, around 20 to 24 tons, because the packing takes up space and adds weight.
So if someone asks how many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container, “25 tons” is the right number to plan with. Then adjust for your packing and your port.
Why does this matter so much? Because almost every price in the rice trade is quoted per ton, but almost every cost after the mill is charged per container. Freight, port fees, trucking, customs clearance and container detention are all per box. The more rice you can legally and safely put in each box, the lower your cost per ton. Knowing how many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container lets you compare quotes properly, plan your cash, and work out your selling price before the rice even leaves Thailand.
Why It’s About 25 Tons
A 20ft container is roughly 5.9 metres long, 2.35 metres wide and 2.39 metres high inside. That’s about 33 cubic metres of space. The container itself can legally carry a lot more weight than 25 tons, but there are two limits that matter.
Space. Milled rice packed in bags takes up roughly 1.2 to 1.35 cubic metres per ton, depending on the grain and the bag. So 25 tons of rice fills most of a 20ft box. Rice is one of those cargoes where the weight and the space come out quite close together.
Road weight. The container has to go by truck from our warehouse to the port, and from your port to your warehouse. Most countries set a maximum total weight for the truck, trailer and container. That usually stops a 20ft container from going much above 25 to 27 tons of cargo.
So the real answer to how many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container is “as much as the space and the roads allow”, and for most shipments that’s 25 tons. For general container facts, the intermodal container article on Wikipedia is a good reference.
How Many Tons of Rice Fit in a 20ft Container by Bag Size
Here’s the table we use when a buyer asks how many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container for a given bag size.
| Packing | Bags per 20ft | Approx. net tons |
|---|---|---|
| 50kg PP woven bag | 500 | 25 |
| 25kg PP woven bag | 1,000 | 25 |
| 20kg bag | 1,250 | 25 |
| 10kg bag | 2,300 to 2,500 | 23 to 25 |
| 5kg bags in 20kg or 25kg master bags | 4,000 to 5,000 small bags | 20 to 25 |
| 2kg bags in master bags | around 10,000 | about 20 to 22 |
| 1kg bags in cartons | 18,000 to 22,000 | about 18 to 22 |
| Bulk in a liner bag | n/a | 25 to 27 |
These numbers change a little by grade and by packing style, so we’ll always give you the exact count on the quote and the packing list.
Does the Type of Rice Change the Answer?
A bit. When you ask how many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container, the grain does play a small part. Different rice has different density, so the same weight takes a slightly different amount of room.
- Long grain white rice like our white rice 5% broken packs well. 25 tons fits comfortably.
- Fragrant rice like Thai Hom Mali and Thai jasmine is similar. Retail packs reduce the load, not the rice.
- Parboiled rice like our Thai parboiled rice 5% broken is dense and loads at 25 tons easily.
- Broken rice like Thai white rice 100% broken packs tighter, so it can sometimes go a little heavier where roads allow.
- Glutinous rice like our Thai glutinous rice loads much the same as white rice.
- Red cargo rice like our Thai red cargo rice keeps its bran layer, so it’s a touch bulkier, but 25 tons is still normal.
So the answer to how many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container barely changes across grades. It’s packing and weight rules that make the difference.
Why Retail Packs Lower the Load
If you want your own brand on 1kg, 2kg or 5kg bags, expect the load to drop. There are a few reasons.
Small bags don’t stack as tightly as big ones. There’s more air between them. If they go into cartons or master bags, the cardboard and the outer bag take space and weight too. And small packs are softer, so we don’t stack them as high, to avoid crushing the bottom layer on a long voyage.
In practice, a 20ft container of 5kg bags in 25kg master bags usually carries 22 to 25 tons. A container of 1kg vacuum packs in cartons might carry 18 to 20 tons. So when a retail buyer asks how many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container, we always ask about the packing first. The answer for 50kg bags and for 1kg packs is not the same.
Our private label Thai Hom Mali rice guide shows the retail packing options we offer.
Floor Loading or Pallets?
How you load changes how many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container. Most rice is floor loaded. That means the bags are stacked by hand straight onto the container floor, with a liner underneath. It fits the most rice in the box and it’s cheaper.
Pallets make unloading faster at your end, especially if you have forklifts and a busy warehouse. But the pallets take up space and weight. A palletised 20ft container of rice usually carries 18 to 22 tons instead of 25.
| Method | Load in a 20ft | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Floor loaded bags | about 25 tons | most importers, lowest cost per ton |
| Palletised bags | about 18 to 22 tons | supermarkets, warehouses with forklifts |
| Slip sheets | about 22 to 24 tons | a middle option, needs a push-pull forklift |
If you’re not sure, go with floor loading. That’s what most of our buyers choose, and it gives the best answer to how many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container.
What About a 40ft Container?
This surprises a lot of people who have only asked how many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container. A 40ft container has about twice the space of a 20ft, but it can’t carry twice the weight on the road. For heavy cargo like rice, a 40ft container usually carries 26 to 28 tons, not 50.
That means that for bagged rice, two 20ft containers (50 tons) are usually better value than one 40ft (about 27 tons). The 40ft makes sense mainly for light retail packing, where you run out of space before you run out of weight, or on routes where a 40ft costs little more than a 20ft.
| Container | Approx. space | Usual rice load |
|---|---|---|
| 20ft standard | 33 cubic metres | 25 tons |
| 40ft standard | 67 cubic metres | 26 to 28 tons |
| 40ft high cube | 76 cubic metres | 26 to 28 tons |
So when you ask how many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container compared with a 40ft, the 20ft wins on cost per ton for most rice.
How We Load a Container
Knowing how many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container is one thing. Loading it well is another. Here’s what happens on our side when we stuff a container.
- We check the container. Clean, dry, no holes, no smells, doors seal properly. A damp or dirty container can spoil the rice.
- We line it. Kraft paper or plastic sheeting on the floor and walls, and sometimes desiccant bags to absorb moisture on long routes.
- We stack the bags. Tight, even stacks, heaviest at the bottom, with no gaps that let the load shift at sea.
- We count. Every bag is counted and checked against the packing list.
- We fumigate if needed. Many countries require it, and some want it done inside the sealed container.
- We seal and weigh. The container is sealed, the seal number goes on every document, and the verified gross mass is declared to the shipping line.
Good loading matters as much as the number. A container of 25 tons loaded badly can arrive with torn bags and wet rice. We’ve been doing this since 1980, so we’re careful. You can see more on our quality control page.
Condensation: The Hidden Risk
Rice travels through hot and cold seas, and moisture inside the container can condense on the roof and drip onto the bags. That’s called “container rain”, and it can cause mould and stains.
To avoid it we:
- Keep the rice moisture at 14% or below before packing.
- Use a clean, dry container.
- Line the walls and roof.
- Add desiccant bags on long voyages.
- Avoid loading on very humid days where we can.
It’s worth knowing about, because a buyer who only asks how many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container, and not how it’s protected, can end up with a full container of damaged rice.
What the Load Means for Your Price
Your price per ton and your freight per container go together. For example, if you’re paying $700 a ton FOB for jasmine and the freight is $1,500 per 20ft container:
- 25 tons of rice: $17,500
- Freight: $1,500, or $60 a ton
- Delivered cost before duty and local charges: about $760 a ton
If your packing drops the load to 20 tons, the same freight becomes $75 a ton. So the answer to how many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container isn’t just a loading question. It changes your cost per ton. Our Thai jasmine rice price per ton guide explains the rice side of that number.
Mixed Containers
One of the best things about buying from a Thai mill is that you can mix grades in one container. For example:
- 15 tons of white rice 5% broken in 50kg bags
- 5 tons of Hom Mali in 5kg bags
- 5 tons of glutinous rice in 25kg bags
That’s still about 25 tons, but you get three products to test. Each grade gets its own line on the packing list and its own certificates. It’s a great way to start. Our guide on how to import rice from Thailand explains the full order process.
How Many Containers Do You Need?
Once you know how many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container, work backwards from your sales. If you sell 100 tons of rice a month, that’s four 20ft containers. If you sell 30 tons a month, one container every month or so will do. Plan for sailing time and customs clearance too, so you don’t run out while the next load is at sea.
Some of our buyers take a single container every few months. Others take ten or more a month. We handle both. If you’re buying Hom Mali in volume, our post on Thai Hom Mali rice bulk and container supply has more detail.
Ports and Weight Limits
Weight limits are set at both ends, so we’ll always check your port before we promise a load above 25 tons. In some countries the limit for a 20ft container on the road is lower, and overweight containers get fined or stopped. In others it’s higher, and we can go to 26 or 27 tons.
We ship from Bangkok and Laem Chabang to ports worldwide: Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, the Americas and Oceania. Tell us your port and we’ll tell you exactly how many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container on that route.
The Papers That Go With Each Container
Every container gets its own entry on the packing list and bill of lading, with bag count, weight and seal number. The phytosanitary certificate, certificate of origin and fumigation certificate cover the lot. We explain each one in our guide to rice export documents.
For international rules on declaring the weight of a loaded container, the shipping industry follows the verified gross mass rule set by the International Maritime Organization. We declare it on every box.
Storing Your Rice After It Arrives
Once the container is at your warehouse, unload it quickly. Don’t leave rice sitting in a closed container in the sun. Stack the bags on pallets, off the floor and away from walls, in a cool, dry, clean store. Keep fragrant rice away from strong smells. Rotate stock so the oldest rice goes out first.
Our rice keeps well. Most grades have a shelf life of up to 24 months when stored properly.

Mistakes Buyers Make With Container Loads
We see the same few mistakes about how many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container again and again, usually from buyers who got a quote somewhere else first.
Assuming a 40ft carries 50 tons. It doesn’t, for the road weight reasons above. Planning around 50 tons in a 40ft leads to nasty surprises on freight per ton.
Not checking the net weight. A quote says “25 tons” but the bags are short-filled, so you actually get 24.4 tons. Always ask for an independent weight certificate at loading. We can supply one with every load.
Overloading. A supplier squeezes in 28 tons to look cheaper per ton, and the container gets stopped or fined on your roads. Now the savings are gone and the rice is late.
Forgetting the packing. A buyer asks how many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container, hears “25”, orders 1kg retail packs, and is surprised when the load comes in at 19 tons. The packing always changes the answer.
Not protecting against moisture. No liner, no desiccant, a long hot voyage, and the top layer of bags arrives damp. It’s a small cost to prevent and an expensive problem to fix.
What We Need to Plan Your Load
To tell you exactly how many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container for your order, send us:
- The rice grade or grades you want.
- The bag size and whether you want your own printed bags.
- Floor loaded or palletised.
- Your destination port and the final delivery point.
- How many containers, and how often.
We’ll come back with the bag count, the net and gross weight per container, the price per ton and the loading date. No guesswork.
Before You Book: A Short Checklist
Before you book your first container, run through this list. It will save you a lot of questions later.
- Your port. Some ports have lower road weight limits, or fees for heavy containers.
- Your road limit. Ask your trucking company what a 20ft container can weigh on your roads.
- Your packing. 50kg, 25kg, retail, pallets or floor loaded. This decides how many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container for you.
- Your warehouse. Can you unload 25 tons by hand in a day? If not, pallets might help.
- Your sales speed. How long will 25 tons take to sell? Shelf life is long, but fresh rice sells better.
- Your documents. Import licence, special certificates, and any wording your country needs.
- Your payment. LC, TT or CAD. Agree it early.
Send us the answers and we’ll plan the load around them.
A Simple Year Plan
Here’s an example of how a medium-sized importer might plan a year of rice, using 20ft containers.
| Month | Containers | Contents |
|---|---|---|
| January | 2 | white rice 5% broken, 50kg |
| March | 2 | white rice 5% broken, plus 5 tons Hom Mali |
| May | 2 | white rice and parboiled mix |
| July | 2 | white rice 5% broken |
| September | 2 | white rice and jasmine mix |
| November | 3 | extra for the year-end season |
That’s 13 containers, or about 325 tons for the year. Booking regular loads like this helps us plan paddy and usually means a steadier price for you.
