What Cheap Broken Rice Wholesale Caribbean Buyers Are Actually Buying

Broken rice is just rice that snapped during milling. Every mill makes it. The mill sorts the pieces out from the whole grains and sells them by grade. A 25% broken grade means up to a quarter of the lot is pieces and the rest is whole grain. A 100% broken grade, A1 Super in the Thai standard, is all pieces.

The rice itself isn’t a lower variety. It’s the same paddy and the same milling as the whole grain. That’s why cheap broken rice wholesale Caribbean buyers can sell it with a clear conscience. It cooks the same, tastes the same, and costs less. The only thing you give up is the look of long whole grains in the pot. If you’d like the general background, the broken rice page on Wikipedia is a decent read, and we keep our own notes in what is broken rice used for.

Why Cheap Broken Rice Wholesale Caribbean Demand Holds Up

Rice is a staple across the islands. Rice and peas in Jamaica. Moro and locrio in the Dominican Republic. Pelau in Trinidad. Diri ak pwa in Haiti. Cook-up rice in Guyana. A lot of that rice is cooked with beans, coconut milk, meat and seasoning, so the grain gets mixed into a dish rather than sitting on the plate alone. For that kind of cooking, broken rice works fine. You can see how central rice is to island cooking in the Caribbean cuisine overview on Wikipedia.

Most islands grow little or no rice of their own. Guyana and Suriname do, and they supply part of the region, but much of the rest is imported from Asia and the Americas. Island buyers are paying freight on every ton, so the cheaper the rice at origin, the more room there is to stay competitive on the shelf. That’s the real reason demand for cheap broken rice wholesale Caribbean supply has stayed steady for years.

The Grades We Sell

Our cheap broken rice wholesale Caribbean range covers four main grades. These are the broken grades we ship most to the region. Each one links to the full product page.

We also sell white rice 10% broken and white rice 5% broken for buyers who want a better grade alongside the cheap line. Many distributors run two or three price points, and a mixed order lets them do that. Everything we mill is on our products page.

These are the specs we put in the contract for our cheap broken rice wholesale Caribbean orders. Every lot is checked before it’s bagged.

Which Grade Should You Buy?

It depends on who you sell to.

If your customers are families buying rice for daily meals, white 25% broken is the safest choice. It looks like normal rice in the bag and costs less than whole grain. If price is everything, and your buyers are used to it, white 100% broken goes further for the money.

If your market likes parboiled rice, which a lot of Trinidad, Guyana and parts of Jamaica do, parboiled 25% broken gives you separate, firm grains at a lower price than 5% parboiled. Kitchens that cook big pots and keep rice warm for hours, like schools, hospitals and cook shops, often prefer parboiled 100% broken.

Feed mills, breweries and flour makers almost always want 100% broken. They’re going to grind it or cook it down anyway.

Plenty of cheap broken rice wholesale Caribbean buyers start with one container split between two grades. That’s the easiest way to test the market.

Packing

Packing choices change the price of cheap broken rice wholesale Caribbean orders more than people expect. Standard packing is 50 kg woven polypropylene bags. We also pack 25 kg bags, which shops find easier to handle and sell. For the Caribbean we often recommend an inner PE liner, because the sea leg is long and warm.

  • 25 kg or 50 kg PP bags
  • Plain bags with shipping marks, or printed with your brand
  • Inner liner on request
  • English, Spanish, French or Dutch text, depending on your island
  • Lot number and production date on each bag

A 20-foot container usually holds about 25 to 26 tons in 50 kg bags. The full breakdown is in how many tons of rice fit in a 20ft container.

Shipping Cheap Broken Rice Wholesale Caribbean Orders

There’s rarely a direct line from Thailand to the islands. Containers usually go through a hub, often in the Caribbean itself like Kingston, Caucedo or Freeport, or through Panama. From there a feeder takes the box on to your port. Plan on six to eight weeks from loading in Thailand, sometimes more.

We quote FOB Thailand if you have your own forwarder, or CIF to your port if you’d rather we handle the freight. Freight is a big piece of the landed cost on cheap broken rice wholesale Caribbean orders, often a bigger share than the rice margin itself, so it’s worth comparing. Our post on FOB vs CIF rice price explains how to compare quotes properly.

Ports we commonly quote to include Kingston, Port of Spain, Point Lisas, Bridgetown, Castries, Santo Domingo, Caucedo, Port-au-Prince, Georgetown, Paramaribo, Nassau and Willemstad. If yours isn’t on the list, ask anyway.

Duties and Landed Cost

Every island has its own import rules. CARICOM member states apply a common external tariff to rice from outside the region, and some have extra fees, VAT or licensing on top. The Dominican Republic and Haiti have their own systems. Check the duty with your customs broker before you place an order, because it can change whether a grade makes sense.

The way to work out the real cost is simple. Add rice price, freight, insurance, duty, port charges, trucking and your warehouse cost, then divide by the kilos you’ll actually sell. When cheap broken rice wholesale Caribbean buyers do that sum, the cheapest FOB price isn’t always the cheapest landed price. A clean lot that sells fast often beats a lower price on a lot that sits.

Documents

The standard set of papers for cheap broken rice wholesale Caribbean shipments is:

  • Commercial invoice
  • Packing list
  • Bill of lading
  • Certificate of origin
  • Phytosanitary certificate
  • Fumigation certificate
  • Quality and weight certificate from an independent surveyor
  • Certificate of analysis

Some islands need extra stamps or a specific certificate format. Tell us early and we’ll prepare it before loading. Our rice export documents checklist goes through each one.

How We Keep Cheap Rice From Being Bad Rice

The word “cheap” worries buyers, and fair enough. Plenty of cheap broken rice wholesale Caribbean offers turn out to be old crop, damp, full of dust or crawling with insects. We don’t sell that, and here’s what we do to make sure.

  • Every lot runs through a color sorter to remove stones, husk and discolored pieces.
  • We sift out fine powder and bran so you’re not paying for dust.
  • Moisture is checked from the bagging line, not just a single sample.
  • Stock is fumigated before loading and the certificate goes with the papers.
  • We keep a sealed retained sample from every lot.
  • An independent surveyor checks quality and weight at loading if you want one.

Our quality control page explains the checks in more detail. Low price should come from the grade, not from cutting corners.

Storage on the Islands

Heat and humidity are the enemy, and good storage is what keeps cheap broken rice wholesale Caribbean stock sellable. Keep bags on pallets, off the floor and away from walls. Don’t stack too high. Keep the warehouse ventilated. Rotate stock so the oldest sells first. Check for weevils every couple of weeks. White broken rice keeps several months like that. Parboiled keeps a bit longer. If you buy for a long hold, ask for liners and lower moisture.

Price

We don’t publish a fixed price, because Thai rice prices move week to week with the harvest, the baht, freight and what other exporting countries are doing. What stays the same is the order: 100% broken is the cheapest, then 25% broken, then 10% and 5%. Parboiled sits a little above white in each grade.

For a quote, tell us:

  • Grade and broken percentage
  • White or parboiled
  • Bag size and printing
  • Quantity in containers
  • Destination port
  • FOB or CIF
  • Payment method

You’ll get a dated offer with the specs in writing. If you’re comparing cheap broken rice wholesale Caribbean quotes from several sellers, line them up on the same grade, moisture, packing and Incoterm. A quote that’s a little lower is often for something different.

Payment Terms

For cheap broken rice wholesale Caribbean orders, we usually work with a deposit by TT and the balance against copy documents, or an irrevocable letter of credit at sight. For regular buyers, other terms can be discussed. We don’t load without a clear payment route, which protects both of us.

Minimum Order

Our minimum for cheap broken rice wholesale Caribbean orders is one 20-foot container, which is about the smallest load that makes sense on freight. On a first order you can split that between two grades, say white 25% broken and white 100% broken, as long as it’s in clean rows of bags. More on this in our Thai rice minimum order quantity guide.

Why Thai Broken Rice

Thai mills have used color sorting across whole lines for years, and the grade system is well defined. A1 Super is a known product. That makes it easier for cheap broken rice wholesale Caribbean buyers to compare offers and to claim if something is wrong. Vietnamese, Indian and Guyanese rice all have their place in the region, and we won’t run them down. If you’re comparing origins, read Thai rice vs Vietnamese rice.

Repacking Into Retail Bags

A lot of Caribbean wholesalers buy 50 kg bags and repack into 1 lb, 2 lb, 5 lb or 1 kg and 2 kg bags for the shops. That’s often where the margin is. If you plan to do this, a few things help.

Ask for 50 kg bags with a liner if the rice will sit before repacking. Keep the repacking room dry and clean. Sift the rice once more before it goes into retail bags, because a little powder always settles at the bottom of a 50 kg bag after weeks at sea. Print the grade honestly on the retail pack. Shoppers who know they’re buying broken rice at a fair price come back. Shoppers who think they were tricked don’t.

Some cheap broken rice wholesale Caribbean buyers skip repacking altogether and ask us to pack 5 kg or 10 kg bags in Thailand. That costs more per ton at origin but saves labor at home. It’s worth pricing both ways.

Island by Island

Every market is a little different, and the best cheap broken rice wholesale Caribbean buyers know their own customers better than anyone. Still, here’s what we generally see.

Jamaica. A mix of white and parboiled demand. Shoppers are price-sensitive, and 25% broken sells well in the shops. Parboiled is popular with cook shops.

Trinidad and Tobago. Parboiled is strong, partly because of the Indo-Trinidadian cooking tradition. Broken parboiled sells for daily cooking and food service.

Dominican Republic. The country grows a lot of its own rice and protects it, so imports depend on quota and tariff. When the window opens, buyers often want white rice at a sharp price.

Haiti. One of the biggest rice importers in the region per person, and very price-driven. Broken rice is a big part of the market.

Cuba. Large demand and long, complicated shipping. We cover it separately in 100% broken rice suppliers for Cuba.

Smaller islands. Lower volumes, so mixed containers and shared freight matter more. A single 20-foot box can last a small distributor several months.

Guyana and Suriname. Rice producers themselves. They export rice into the region, so imports there are mostly for special grades rather than cheap broken rice.

Working With Your Forwarder

If you already ship other goods from Asia, your forwarder may be able to fit rice into the same routing and get a better rate. We’re happy to work FOB with whoever you use. Send us their contact and we’ll coordinate the booking, the stuffing date and the papers. If you’d rather not deal with freight, we quote CIF and book it ourselves.

We send photos of the bags, the loading and the container seal on every shipment. That’s standard for us, and you should expect it from anyone selling cheap broken rice wholesale Caribbean buyers depend on.

Timing Your Orders

Thailand has a main crop harvested late in the year and a second crop earlier in the year. Prices can soften when new crop comes in and firm up when stocks are low. Freight rates also swing with the season and with what’s happening on the big shipping routes.

Our advice is boring but it works. Don’t wait until the warehouse is empty to order. With six to eight weeks of transit, you want the next container on the water while you still have stock. Buyers who plan this way rarely have to accept a bad price in a hurry. If you buy cheap broken rice wholesale Caribbean style, a container at a time, a regular schedule also helps us hold a steady price for you.

What to Ask Any Seller

Before you send money to anyone, ask:

  • Can you send a sample from the same lot you’ll ship?
  • What’s the moisture, foreign matter and broken percentage, in writing?
  • Who is the surveyor, and will they check at loading?
  • Can I see photos of the loading and the seal?
  • Is this new crop or old crop?
  • What happens if the rice arrives off spec?

Good sellers answer all of these without a fuss. If someone offering cheap broken rice wholesale Caribbean prices dodges the questions, walk away.

Mistakes We See

These are the mistakes we see most often from first-time buyers chasing cheap broken rice wholesale Caribbean deals.

  • Buying the lowest price without a written spec. You have nothing to claim against.
  • Skipping the surveyor to save a little money.
  • Forgetting how long the voyage is and buying damp rice.
  • Ordering more than the warehouse can sell in a few months.
  • Comparing an FOB quote against a CIF quote and thinking one is cheaper.

Other Caribbean Markets We Cover

We’ve written separate guides for buyers in specific islands and for specific types of rice. If you’re buying for Haiti, see broken rice imports to Haiti. For parboiled rice, see parboiled rice suppliers in Jamaica, bulk parboiled rice Trinidad and Tobago and parboiled rice demand in the Caribbean. For whole grain parboiled, there’s Thai parboiled rice for Caribbean importers.
